Dance Film – Are U There?
A contemporary-hip hop dance film directed, shot, and edited by me, featuring choreography by Kylee Miller. Shot in Hampshire College’s dance studio with dramatic magenta lighting and synced to Are You There? by Mura Masa. This piece blends bold visuals with sharp edits to highlight emotion, movement, and rhythm.
This dance film was created for my film production class and shot in the Hampshire College Main Dance Studio. I directed, shot, lit, and edited the piece, working closely with choreographer Kylee Miller to bring her contemporary-hip hop routine to life. The music, Are You There? by Mura Masa, drives the mood and pacing of the entire edit.
As the mastermind behind the camera and editing, I captured the raw energy and emotion of the performance using a Canon AX11. I filmed a variety of angles—wide shots, mediums, and close-ups—to emphasize both the choreography and the dancer’s expressions. For lighting, I used a red and blue filter setup to create a magenta tone that cast a surreal glow against the black backdrop, enhancing the dramatic feel of the movement.
Post-production was done in Adobe Premiere Pro. I synced each transition tightly to the beat and flow of the music, making sure the cuts complemented the dancer’s timing and emphasized key moments in the choreography. My goal was to keep the audience locked in from the first step to the last frame.
This project was a deep dive into creative direction, cinematography, and visual storytelling—and it was one of the most fulfilling projects I’ve worked on. The result? An immersive, dynamic video that captures the spirit of the dance and the collaboration behind it.
